What is Scientific Illustration?

Scientific illustration is a discipline of art whose goal is to communicate complex ideas, subjects, and details to a broad audience via many various art mediums. As the Franklin Institute puts it the most perfectly - "Scientific illustration is art in the service of science."

Scientific illustrators are artist who are trained in the sciences and can blend both art and science together.  Their training is unique and requires semesters to years more schooling depending on the vein of  scientific illustration they pursue.

I am a researcher and want an illustration for my work. How does this work?

You have completed step one: finding a scientific illustrator. If you have not already looked over my portfolio, you can view it here.

If my art style is what you are after, and you would like to being collaborating on an illustration, you can send me an email with this information:

  • A brief summary of your research.
  • A description of the project you have in mind (species depiction, life cycle, bones, etc.).
  • What art medium you want this created in (pencil or digital).
  • How you plan to use the art such as for a paper, book, or presentations. This is for licensing purposes.
  • Your deadline for the illustration if you have one.
  • A budget if you have one. If you are simply price shopping please provide answers for bullets above and I will provide you with a quote.

From there I will let you know if your project is attainable and provide you a rough timeline for the project's completion. Please plan for at least a month for turn-around of the first draft. Projects with tight deadlines are likely to be rejected.

If you have more questions about this process, please email me at corvid.illustration@gmail.com.
